Background

Ken joined the Biomedical Computer Laboratory (BCL) of the Washington University School of Medicine in 1970 as a programmer, working on applications to detect abnormal heart beats in the electrocardiograms of patients in the Barnes Hospital Coronary Care Unit, as well as ambulatory patients participating in research studies, local and multi-center, sponsored by both major pharmaceutical corporations and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

Later at BCL, he became involved with the Ophthalmology Department on a project to better understand visual-field defects using color-contrast perimetry and with the Genetics Department helping develop a graphical user interface for quantitative imaging and analysis of electrophoretic gels and autoradiograms. For several years, he served as part-time business manager of BCL.

In 1994, Ken moved to the ERL of the Radiology Department, where he first worked in clinical activities, helping migrate the Barnes-Jewish Hospital towards a nearly filmless radiology-imaging environment. Later, he helped conduct a study to understand whether radiologist-readers could detect differences between digitized radiology images produced by both laser and CCD scanners. Currently, he helps manage the collection of 48,000 CT studies into a CT Image Library for the National Lung Screening Trial.
